But her short reign was troubled: Catholics versus Protestants struggling for the throne, and a pretty messy love life: her second husband was murdered, and then she was kidnapped by and married the man widely blamed for the murder. Mary was a cousin of Queen Elizabeth I of England, and she was assumed by many to be next in line for the crown. Thus, she was a threat to Queen Elizabeth, who eventually had her executed. Mary's motto was "In My End Is My Beginning."
Catherine of Aragon was the daughter of Queen Isabella I of Spain and her husband and co-ruler, King Ferdinand. Promised in marriage to the heir to the Tudor throne, prince Arthur, she married Arthur's brother Henry after Arthur died. Her failure to have sons meant Henry looked elsewhere for a wife. He broke from the Church of Rome in order to end his marriage to Catherine, who continued her own devotion to Catholicism and passed that commitment on to her daughter, the future Queen Mary I ("Bloody Mary"). Her motto was "Humble and Loyal."
La verdad es que me encanta el resultado; bueno, los resultados. María de Escocia siempre me ha resultado digna de admiración, pues supo mantenerse fuerte y consecuente a sus ideales; además, su hijo se sentó en el trono de Inglaterra, lo que, para mí, la hace vencedora en la sombra. Poco tengo que decir sobre Catalina de Aragón, sólo que era más reina y más mujer que cualquiera que rodeaba a Enrique VIII en su infinito harén de mujeres; fue una auténtica señora, de los pies a la cabeza, y una auténtica reina, hija de grandiosos reyes, tía de emperador, amiga de los más grandes de Inglaterra, como Tomás Moro. Demasiado excelsa para una corte de botarates como era la de Enrique VIII.
Parece una soberana estupidez, pero estos tests hacen que una se deje llevar por esoñaciones infantiles de que cualquier tiempo pasado fue mejor. Un gran blog done los haya; Caroline hace un gran trabajo, haciendo lo que yo siempre he admirado: que la historia deba conocerse como eso, como una historia que tienen a bien contarte, y que la escuches con detalle, como el que oye un cuento... con la maravillosa salvedad de que nada fue ficticio.
